Kids look forward to summer vacation all year. They can’t wait to have time off from school and have a fun summer. Although kids look forward to it, many parents may not, as most people still have to work and need someone to watch their kids throughout the summer whenever possible.

There are different options for summer sitters, but they will depend on the age of your child, and in many cases, your budget or what you can reasonably spend. Older kids will likely benefit from and have fun at either a sleep away camp or a day camp, whereas young children may be better suited to having someone come watch them in their home.

Finding the right supervision for your kid during the summer can be tough, but we have some tips for choosing the right childcare for your needs!

If you need a regular sitter, a nanny may be your best bet. Often times, nannies are older and more experienced in taking care of and watching children. Due to that however, they may be more cost prohibitive for some families, but can be a great option for summer vacation when you may need longer hours of care for your children.

If you need an occasional sitter, a responsible, local teen who is also off from school can be a big help. Often, teens will be less cost prohibitive, but ensuring the teen you hire is responsible can be stressful. Reaching out to your community and talking with references can help put your mind at ease when hiring a teen to watch your children.

Consider trading for child care. Many local parents may be in a similar bind but have different work schedule requirements, meaning they may be able to watch your children when you need them, and you may be able to watch theirs when they need you. This is a great option if you are concerned about the cost of childcare, or if other options are unavailable.

Summer camps and day camps. If you have older children and can afford it, summer camps and day camps are an excellent option. However, they require more planning and ideally are planned far enough in advance before camps fill up in the summer.
